Winter Snow Fun

So what is everyone doing in our foot of snow? My house has decided to embrace the weather.
Seems like everyone I know has been out sledding and drinking cocoa, building snowmen, snowball fights, and making angels.

My kids are building an igloo with the neighbor. Yeah!!!! That means there will be no snow in the yard by the time they are done their 12 foot wide masterpiece.
We will be making Snow Ice Cream a bit later.

I have made a pot of Chicken and Dumplings for lunch. This will help warm them from the inside out.

Here are some other activities you can do as well:

Snow Graffiti - spray bottles with water and food coloring
Ice and Easy - hide colored ice cubes in the snow for a scavenger hunt
Snow Golf - pack down snow every few feet, hide tin cans to make the "Holes"
Target Practice  - hang a target and make LOTS of snowballs

or try any of these tried and true activities:
* Have a snowball fight. Divide your family into teams, then start throwing. Save this one for last so you can go inside, dry off, and have some hot chocolate.
* Walk this way. Have your kids follow your lead as you move like different animals: Waddle like a penguin, stomp like a bear, and wiggle like a fish.
* Create a maze. Put on your hiking boots and stamp out a path for your kids to follow.
* Plan a scavenger hunt. Hide an apple in a mound of snow so that a little bit peeks out. Give the kids silly directions to follow as they search for it.
* Play freeze tag. Can you think of a more appropriate game for a chilly day? Once someone's tagged by the person who's "It," he has to stay frozen until another player tags him again.
* Make faces. Use handfuls of packed snow to create funny characters on a tree trunk.

A Habitat for Birds
NJ Audubon Society has identified over 250 different species of birds in the Park. Most of them are migratory so spring and autumn are very busy seasons in the Park.
Wetlands
These wetlands provide habitat for a variety of water birds such as loons, grebes, cormorants, herons, ducks, geese, swans, egrets, and many more, including the American white pelican, which may be seen in the fall. The wetlands also provide habitat for plants, snakes, fish, turtles and frogs in various stages of development.
Woodlands
We have a variety of trees, plants, berry bushes, climbing vines and wild flowers. A special attraction of the woodlands is the succession forest; you can see early reforestation (low growth and seedling trees) to older growth (trees are taller with less light filtering down to the ground and, consequently, less underbrush) all the way to the mature, or climax forest where trees are thirty feet high, the canopy is broad and the forest floor is dark. These trees ultimately compete for water, begin to die, fall to the ground, and the entire process begins again.

CUSTOMER REVIEW: I call it "Van Saun" and if you've never made it for a day trip, I'd highly recommend it. So affordable and a manageable size for a younger family. A carousel, pony rides, train ride and various animal exhibits. Gotta love the golden tamarins! Enjoy the adjacent playground and county park facilities. They recently added a wonderful indoor learning center that is a welcome cooling off point. The food for purchase is limited but picnic tables are available in the park.
